CONTEXT

The Davis, Markert, and Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom was established in response to the unjust suspensions of Davis, Markert, and Nickerson in 1954. This era, known as the Red Scare, saw numerous scholars facing termination, suspension, and censorship.
