Faculty Senate Members are invited to submit nominations and self-nominations for candidates to run for election for two University Senate officer positions:

I.  University Senate Secretary
II. University Senate Parliamentarian

  • Deadline: Monday, October 21 at noon. Nominees will be contacted to verify their interest and to submit a candidate statement of no more than 100 words.
  • Terms: Three years, starting with the beginning of the winter term in January.
  • Eligibility: Any current Faculty Senate member (~7,500 faculty) or retired Senate member (see also below).
  • Election: Both Senate officers will be elected either during or shortly after the University Senate meeting scheduled for November 4th from 3:15-5pm.

I.  University Senate Secretary

  • Term: Three years, starting with the beginning of the winter term in January.
  • Eligibility: Any current Faculty Senate member (~7,500 faculty) or retired Senate member. However, a Secretary who has served a full three-year term will not be immediately eligible for reelection.
  • Responsibilities in coordination with the Faculty Senate Office: To assist the Chair of the Assembly in the construction of an agenda; to receive reports, motions, or resolutions to be presented at Senate meetings; to issue the call for meetings both regular and called; to compile and keep up to date the official list of Senate members; to keep and distribute minutes of all Senate meetings; to issue releases in accordance with Article 1.4(2); to keep current copies of “Rules of the University Senate, the Senate Assembly, and the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs” and to distribute copies to members of the Senate at appropriate intervals; and to conduct mail or electronic ballots. Execution of some of these responsibilities may be delegated to the staff of the Faculty Senate Office, with the approval of SACUA.
  • Meetings: The Secretary takes minutes for SACUA, Senate Assembly, and University Senate meetings (hybrid), which occur most Mondays (~3-5pm) from late August through late May except during university breaks.
  • The Secretary is a non-voting member of SACUA and the Senate Assembly.
  • Additional roles: The Secretary may be invited to serve as a SACUA liaison for two Senate Assembly committees

II.  University Senate Parliamentarian

  • Term: Three years, starting with the beginning of the winter term in January.
  • Eligibility: Any current Faculty Senate member (~7,500 faculty) or retired Senate member.
  • Responsibilities: The Parliamentarian shall provide impartial advice to the Faculty Senate Chair on matters of interpretation of the Senate Rules, Robert’s Rules of Order, and other applicable rules governing actions of the Senate.
  • Meetings: The Parliamentarian attends Senate Assembly, and University Senate meetings (hybrid), which occur about once per month on Mondays (~3-5pm) from September through April.
  • The Parliamentarian is a non-voting member of the Senate Assembly.
