Keeping in Mind: The McCarthy Era at the University of Michigan
In the 1950s, the University of Michigan caved to political intimidation when President Harlan Hatcher fired three faculty members who refused to cooperate with Senator McCarthy’s red-baiting Committee on “Un-American Activities.” As another tyrannical government takes aim at universities, join us for a screening of Keeping in Mind, a 1988 documentary featuring interviews with Hatcher and the three men he sacrificed to political expediency: Chandler Davis, Clement Markert, and Mark Nickerson. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.
About Adam Kulakow
After more than a 20 year career writing and developing films and TV shows for studios such as Disney, Fox, Universal, Paramount, and Sony, Adam now focuses on the story behind the story. Working with actors and directors, creators and executive producers, production designers, stunt and effects coordinators and other crew, Adam writes, produces, and directs documentaries and features that bring viewers inside the making of shows like Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Dark Winds, Mayfair Witches, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Adam also produced the Texas Public Radio podcast series, Out of Uniform, about the lives of veterans before, during, and after service that was an NPR One Editor’s pick in 2022. After graduating from the University of Michigan where he produced and directed the documentary Keeping in Mind: The McCarthy Era at the University of Michigan, Adam taught literature and writing at prep schools and colleges (such as Phillips Andover and Bennington College) and relocated to Los Angeles to attend the MFA program at the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Nowadays, when not on a film set, he teaches the occasional screenwriting seminar and also teaches guitar, mandolin, and music theory to adults at inperson music camps as well as online. He released an album of original songs in 2023 titled Alive Tonight with his trio, The Wholesome, and continues to perform and record today.
