Open Questions: Institutional Neutrality

Michelle Adams, Henry M. Butzel Professor of Law, and Gary Harper, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Health Behavior and Health Equity, will kick off the series by discussing the much debated topic of Institutional Neutrality.

Institutional neutrality is a policy that some universities – including the University of Michigan– have adopted, that forbids an institution or its leaders from taking positions on political or social issues not directly related to its internal functions. Around the time it was adopted at UM in October, 2024, strong opinions were expressed both for and against the policy, but there were few forums in which the different viewpoints were openly discussed.

This panel aims to enable genuine dialogue about the concept of institutional neutrality. We are delighted to feature two illustrious Michigan faculty members as panelists to share different perspectives of the topic. Everyone interested in civil dialogue is welcome. Join us!
